Someone once told me I don't look like a Pilates Instructor

Someone once told me I didn't look like a Pilates Instructor....

She was an absolutely lovely client who I adored. I asked her what she meant, "because you're a bit fat like the rest of us!"... She definitely did not mean it as an insult

I was 24 years old and I had been in the industry for about 5 years. I lived in London & I loved my job...

I also had disordered eating, I was on a binge-purge cycle, I drank alcohol every day & abused drugs regularly

+Some time later, I remember being "praised" for my slim body - but this was at a time when I was making myself sick & secretly terrified someone was going to find out I was using drugs at work!!

In the Pilates industry - your body is expected to be a certain size & shape - without an actual focus on health. The disordered eating, rampant drug abuse is common with a huge dose of blame & shame heaped in if you do not fit the mould.
Now that I am out of the Pilates industry - I can see that there is an epic underbelly of shame, toxicity & bullying.

My body has always been open for discussion since I was 19 years old & I began this career... I have had literally hundreds of people tell me online over the last 18 years that my body was too fat, too thin, or too something!!

This is a call-out to those in the Pilates & Fitness industries:

Please don't comment on other Instructor's shape & size (It's literally none of your business, and you do not know the emotional stuff going on in their lives)

Focus on health - not size and shape. Focus on sleeping and nourishing yourself and enjoying your body.

Do not over-teach. You are robbing yourself of the beauty & magic of your career! Figure out how many sessions you can teach without getting burnt-out

Heart centered meditations can actually help your teaching - as you align with your heart and soul - you empower your clients to do the same!

It does not matter what size and shape you are: what matters is that you teach with LOVE!

"If I can survive the early 2000's London Pilates scene - I can survive anything!"

This beautiful body has carried me through all of these moments, and I am PROUD & GRATEFUL!🙏
